Joe O’Leary: From Ardahan to Skerries

Joe O' Leary was a distinguished fiddle player and traditional music collector. He was born in the townsland of Coxtown near the village of Ardrahan in South Galway. Growing up amid the western tradition of music, Joe's love for the violin began at an early age. He learned how to play from the school master John Doyle at the local Ballyglass National School. At this time he was also a keen hurler and played with the Ardrahan Club. His brother Mattie hurled at centre field for Galway.

From the beginning of his musical career, Joe was linked with the famed Cooley brothers - Joe and Seamus who hailed from the neighbouring village of Peterswell. In the late 1950's Joe and Seamus Cooley won an All-Ireland duet in Fiddle & Flute. It was not unusual to see the two Joe's - O'Leary and Cooley travelling on Joe O'Leary's motorcycle with Cooley's accordion resting on the petrol tank and O' Leary's fiddle strapped to Cooley's back.

Educated locally he became a skilled carpenter and went to work on the east coast, settling in Co. Meath for some time. He featured on many radio and television broadcasts, making several recordings during his lifetime. In his latter years he turned his attention to making violins and made many fine instruments some of which found their way to the United States.

During the 1950's he made his first recording with Ciaran Mac Mathuna of RTE at the house of Tess and Milo Mullins in Labane. Other local musicians who attended the session were fiddle player Eileen Howley (aunt of Martin and grandaunt of Martin James & David), John and Paddy Donoghue (Gort), Milo Mullins and Seamus Cooley. Joe was to feature on many RTE recordings after this including: 'A Job of Journeywork'. He also made several recordings in the US. Throughout the past thirty years Joe's recordings featured on other traditional music programmes such as; Ceolta Tire and Mo Cheol Thu. His interest in music was not confined to the traditional variety, in the 1960's he spent several years at the Royal College of Music studying a classical repertoire. One of the great joys of his life was to spend time on the Aran Islands, absorbing the pure music of the western seaboard While in Dublin in the 1960's Joe played at a number of venues including the Abbey Tavern, the Old Shieling and the Embankment. He played with many fine musicians including the Clancy Brothers and Willie Clancy. Joe's great love of music, his lack of materialism and his gentle manner endeared him to all he met. Radio broadcaster Ciaran Mac Mathuna in a tribute to Joe said of him 'he was a great friend and the greatest company in the world'.

Joe was married to Fidelma Curtin (from Lisdoonvearna) who was a teacher in Skerries, Co. Dublin. It was here that they spent the latter part of their lives. Joe died in 1990. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Joe's nephew Gerry lives in Coxtown with his wife Ronnie and their son Joseph. Each year his relatives and local musicians headed by local accordion player Peter Gardiner host an annual tribute to Joe. This event is held during December in Labane Ardrahan and is attended by a host of musicians - young and old including his nephew Noel Brady of the group Fiddlers Green.



Máire O’Keeffe is a fiddle player, originally from Tralee, Co. Kerry but now living in Kinvara, Co. Galway. She learned to play the fiddle from Castleisland musician, Nicky McAuliffe and her many influences include the fiddle traditions of her native Kerry as well as the fiddling of Donegal and Clare musicians.

She has long had an avid interest in the fiddle music of Scotland, Shetland and particularly the fiddle and piano based traditions of Cape Breton Island in Canada where she was artist in residence at the internationally renowned Celtic Colours Festival in 2009. Máire has given fiddle workshops all over the world including a nine month stint during the early 1990s as a visiting Irish Traditional Music teacher in Australia.

For many years she was a fiddle tutor at the Willie Clancy Summer School and for the past number of years she has presented a much sought after “performance class” at the school where students are afforded an opportunity to listen to and interact with some of the legendary fiddle players in Irish traditional music.

In Oct 2010, Máire was awarded a Ph.D. at the University of Limerick for a study entitled,“Journey into Tradition: A Social History of the Irish Button Accordion”.



Founding Director of ITMA (The Irish Traditional Music Archive) which was established in 1987. Under his direction, ITMA has become Ireland’s principal archive and resource organisation for Irish traditional music, song and dance. ITMA is widely recognised as a leading and innovative expert organisation that plays an important role in the development of Ireland’s cultural and digital infrastructure. Above all, ITMA is a valued and respected resource for the community of traditional performers, audiences, researchers, broadcasters, academics and the general public. Under Nicholas Carolan’s direction, and through the success of the television series Come West along the Road (RTÉ) and Siar an Bóthar (TG4) which he has researched and presented since 1994, ITMA has been established as the largest repository in existence of the materials of Irish traditional music, song and dance. ITMA’s collections are unequalled anywhere in the world, and its catalogue and a large collection of digitised materials are now freely accessible online at Nicholas Carolan is due to retire in mid-2015, and the Board looks forward to continuing its relationship with him in the years ahead.

(gaelic for ‘lively’) are based in County Antrim, in the north of Ireland. The bedrock of their sound lies firmly within the Irish tradition. However, they are not afraid to incorporate other genres’ nuances into their music. From bluesy riffs to Astor Piazzola-style jazz, to a raunchy New Orleans jamboree vibe, their music always returns to a wonderfully bouncy Irish sound. The result is traditional, with a huge sense of fun and adventure and it all works - wonderfully well.

The Wall Street Journal describes them as  “the most exciting new traditional band to emerge from Ireland this century.”

Irish Music Magazine writes, “Nobody does this stuff better at the moment. Beoga are at the forefront of the new Irish wave.” 

The band was drawn together in 2002 after ‘jamming’ in a ferocious session at the All-Ireland Fleadh. Their unique sound featured the twin dueling accordions of Damian McKee and multi-instrumentalist Seán Óg Graham, pianist Liam Bradley and four times All-Ireland bodhrán champion Eamon Murray. In 2005, the lineup was complete, with the addition of Niamh Dunne, one of Ireland’s premier young talents, on vocals and fiddle.

In 2004, Beoga’s ground-breaking debut album 'a lovely madness', earned international critical acclaim. The Irish Times wrote ‘Individually talented and collectively inspired, this is a quartet who speak a language called music with a fluency beloved of the best multi-linguists.’ The album earned 9/10 in Ireland’s Hot Press music magazine and was in the Top Trad/Folk Albums of the year listings. Irish Music magazine nominated Beoga for the best traditional newcomer’s award describing the work as

"madcap genius, master craftsmen. In Beoga, the Irish music world found another prodigy.”

The group’s second release, entitled ‘Mischief’, firmly catapulted Beoga into the upper stratum of trad bands. ‘Mischief’ received a 9.5/10 rating in Hot Press and earned recognition at the Live Ireland Music Awards, the German Music Awards, and the Best of 2007 listings in many notable publications including the Boston Globe, The Irish Echo, Dirty Linen Magazine and Folk Alley. 

Beoga’s music seduces a diverse array of music lovers, and the release of the 2009 album ‘The Incident’ saw the group continue to blaze a pioneering trail, rewarding world music fans with more fresh creative energy.  The band’s profile rose to a new level with a front page feature in the St Patrick’s Day edition of the Wall Street Journal.  In 2010 ‘The Incident’ was shortlisted for a GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary World Music Album.

International TV/radio appearances and hectic tour schedules followed fast and furious for beoga, gaining notoriety for their charismatic rapport with audiences and highly inventive, energetic performances. In September 2007, Beoga performed live with the BBC Orchestra to a television audience of millions as part of the prestigious ‘Last night of the Proms’.

Major Celtic and Folk festival highlights have included Tokyo’s ‘I love Ireland’ Festival, Australia’s National Celtic Festival, Milwaukee Irish Fest, Tonder, Dranouter, Dublin’s Temple Bar Trad Fest, Germany’s Irish Folk Festival tour, Holland’s Irish Unplugged tour, Austria’s Guinness Irish Christmas, Cambridge Folk Festival, and Glasgow’s Celtic Connections.  In 2009, at Houston International Festival, Congresswoman Jackson Lee presented Beoga with a Congressional Recognition Certificate from the US House of Representatives.

Beoga confirmed their reputation as the most audacious Irish band rooted in trad today with their 2011 album ‘how to tune a fish' attracting fresh superlatives. The album ranked #1 traditional album of 2011 in the esteemed Irish Echo in the USA and Irish Music Magazine describe the collection as

“some of the best music in the world today”.

In 2013 Beoga released 'Live at 10’, a DVD/CD Gala Concert celebrating their 10th Anniversary.  Joined by a cast of star guests, the 'Beoga Big Band' performance captured them at their virtuosic best. It’s a show summed up by Living Tradition as

‘fast, furious, frantic, fun, innovative, diverse and exciting’.

In 2016 Beoga release their 5th studio album. With new, fresh compositions along with their unique blend of inventive arrangements, virtuosi instrumental talents and beautiful vocals, Beogas popularity continues to flourish as they captivate audiences on a global scale.
